Colossians 3:1 - Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your heart on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. NIV Colossians 3:2 - Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. NIV Colossians 3:3 - For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. NIV To set our hearts on things above means to do our very best at living our life with Godly priorities. Not only should we read, study, meditate, and plant God's Word in our heart, but we should put His Word into daily practice, and live our lives according to it. We are to be doers of His Word - not just hearers. (James 1:22 - But be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. NKJV) To set our minds on things above means to concentrate on the eternal rather than the temporal. The things of this world are only temporary, but the things of heaven are everlasting. We should pay attention to the everlasting things, and keep our eyes focused on our treasures in heaven. (Matthew 6:21 - For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. NKJV) "For you died" means that we should have as little desire for improper worldly desires as a dead person would have. As we set our minds on things above we gain God's perspective, giving us the antidote for materialism. As we seek what Christ desires, we break our obsession with worldly pleasures, and learn to look at things from God's view. To be "hidden with Christ" means to be concealed and safe. This is our future hope. We can know that our salvation is indisputable, and we should live every day for Christ. We can not earn our salvation through good works, but through our salvation good works should prevail, for faith without works is dead. (James 2:26 - For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. NKJV)
