No One Can Serve Two Masters

Matthew 6:24 - No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

We live in a materialistic world where many people serve money. They waste all of their lives collecting and storing it, only to die and leave it behind. Their appetite for money and the stuff it can buy goes way beyond their commitment to God.

But Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:24 that we can only serve one master. If you have your heart set on money and material things, you will not be able to focus on God and what He has for you. God alone deserves to be our master. We need to center our lives on Him, and serve Him alone.

Colossians 3:2 - Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.

To set our mind on things above means to concentrate on the eternal rather than the temporal. It means to look at life from God's position and to seek what He desires. We will gain the proper perspective on material goods when we take God's view of them.

Phillipians 3:19 - Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things.

We can become so concerned with the things of this earthly world that we become slaves to our possessions. In essence, our possessions are possessing us. This quest for earthly pleasures and desires will ultimately lead to a path of self destruction.

Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

God is the creator of all things. He created you as an unique individual with a special purpose for this generation. God is the ultimate Master, and He is the only one worthy to be served. You must learn to love and serve God above all the other things He has created.

Exodus 20:2/3 - I am the Lord your God... You shall have no other gods before me.

God gave us this first commandment to help us stay focused on Him. When we put God first in our lives, it helps to keep us from falling into the idolatry and bondage of money and materialism.

When you put money and material things first in your life they become your god. You begin to serve and worship the very thing that will enslave you with it's powerful temptations and lustful desires.

Psalm 46:1 - God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Psalm 86:10 - For God is great and does marvelous deeds.

Psalm 116:5 - The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion.

Isaiah 12:2 - Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid.

Isaiah 12:2b - The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.

Romans 8:31 - If God is for us, who can be against us?

Romans 8:32 - He will graciously give us all things.

Philippians 4:19 - And my God will meet all your needs.

1 John 1:9 - He is faithful and just and will forgive us.

John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only
son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

These are just a few verses that show us how great and awesome God is. 1 John 4:9 tells us that God is love, and he loves us so much he sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

God is not a mean ogre who created a bunch of rules to keep us from enjoying life. In fact, God gave commandments to keep us from the pain, suffering, and consequences of sin, so that we could enjoy life the way He designed it to be.

You can find countless scriptures in His word that point to the perils of sin. You can also find a myriad of scriptures that point to the abundant, joyful, and peacful life that comes with obedience to His Word.

Why then would you choose to serve the master of the earthly realm, which leads to heartache, turmoil, and concequence of sin, when you can choose to serve the one and only true Master of the universe - God - who promises the peace that transcends all understanding.

Philippians 4:7 - And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Money is not a bad thing except when your desire for money is greater than your desire for God. If you seek God and His kingdom first, God will make sure that your finances are more than enough to cover all your needs.
